Network discovery is an important area in computer science. Knowledge about the properties of links can benefit communication libraries both in distributed and high performance computing. One area of network discovery - network tomography - reconstructs a logical view of the network based on end-to-end benchmarks. A new method of network tomography combines the BitTorrent protocol with modern clustering algorithms to reconstruct the bandwidth-related properties of unknown networks. For simple use cases, the method is very efficient in identifying clusters sustaining high bandwidth, and in separating clusters that are connected through bottleneck links.
